April 30: Back to Pasig for story scouting

A slow news day equals heartbreak for daily news reporters.

And that is what I felt as I scout for stories alone in Pasig City. The police blotter has no recent entries, no crime, no event, no press releases. But a reporter still has to submit stories to the desk.

I managed to submit an elections story, but this wasn't the kind of story I can be proud of, I admit.

Citizens set to vote for 2013 midterm elections in Pasig City can now have the chance to use the voting machines, at least in preparation for the May 13 elections.

Pasig City Comelec office has set up the Precint Count Optical Scan (PCOS) Demonstration Center to educate the public, especially the first-time voters, in basic voting machine operation and basic voters' education.

The Pasig PCOS Command Center is located at level 4 lobby of the city hall. It was opened on April 15 and will run until May 8.

Pasig-Comelec Operating Staff Jopet Ancheta said that the original plan is to set-up the command center inside malls, but the office deemed it more accessible to the public if the center is to be located inside the city hall.

According to Ancheta, the center has attracted a significant number of registrants since the first day, with walk-in participants ranging from government employees to students and ordinary citizens.

First-time voter Jayson Rosales, 19, said that although it is necessary to learn the PCOS system, it is still more important to ensure the efficiency of the polling method.

Comelec has to make sure that all ballots and machines will work without glitches during the elections,” Rosales said.

The first PCOS Demo Center was opened in Comelec Main Office at Intramuros, Manila on March 26. Other PCOS demo centers were also set up in key Metro Manila cities.
